Last Friday night Jazz was alive and well in Dayton, at least if you are a fusion fan.

I love traditional jazz, but I also view, what has been deemed “fusion” as jazz too.

So, Allan Holdsworth is at the top of the list for me along with many others, but it is

Allan Holdsworth who was at Gilly’s.

The opening act was a group called “Marbin”. These guys are excellent and will be back in Dayton April 15th performing at the Canal St. Tavern. If you combine Danny Markovitch on Saxophone with Dani Rabin on guitar, you can see the Marbin is assembled by combining the two names. The music is also a combination of the compositional and improvisational talents of these two excellent musicians. Combining the best of the rock/jazz elements, Marbin at times reminded me of some early Mahavishnu Orchestra compositions. The Saxophone taking on the role of the violin in the Mahavishnu context, the sax being processed through harmonizers and other sonic devices to create a modern sound.

Holdsworth was of course awesome, his sonic explorations using guitar synthesizer to create harmonic soundscapes, then launching into his legato style of guitar shredding was in top form. Virgil Donatti was on drums, and he was absolutely amazing all night, he totally energized the room with his skills at the drumkit. But, to me the total

surprise was to be captivated all night by Jimmie Haslip on bass, there really seemed to be no end to the tasteful display of bass chops. He played all the appropriate supporting architecture to allow Mr. Holdsworth to explore the fretboard, but when given the opportunity, his command of the bass was simply astounding, while always staying totally in the pocket with the drummer.

It appears to me that Gilly’s has succeeded once again at giving Dayton an opportunity to hear truly “top notch” musicianship, and I’m happy to report that the place was filled to capacity. So, thank you Jerry for taking the risk to bring these types of acts to Dayton, and keep them coming.
